All Souls Day

All Souls Day

All Souls Day follows All Saints Day, and solemnly commemorates the faithful departed, i.e. those who die with God’s grace and friendship. Catholics believe that not all those who die in God’s grace are immediately ready for the Beatific vision, i.e. the reality and goodness of God and heaven, so they must be purified of “lesser faults,” and the temporal effects of sin. The Catholic Church calls this purification of the elect, “purgatory.” The Catholic teaching on Purgatory essentially requires belief in two realities: 1. that there will be a purification of believers prior to entering heaven and 2. that the prayers and masses of the faithful in some way benefit those in the state of purification. As to the duration, place, and exact nature of this purification, the Church has no official dogma, although Saint Augustine and others used fire as a way to explain the nature of the purification. Many faithful Catholics, including Pope Benedict XVI, grant that Purgatory may be an existential state as opposed to a temporal place. In other words, Purgatory may be something we experience instantaneously, because it is outside of the confines of created time and space. Many non-Catholics, including C.S. Lewis, have believed in Purgatory, and the official dogma of Purgatory is hardly offensive, even if the popular understanding of it has led to confusion. As a more everyday explanation, many liken Purgatory to a place or state where one gets “cleaned up” before entering into the presence of Almighty God.

The Church prays for, and remembers, the faithful departed throughout the entire year. However, All Souls is the general, solemn, day of commemoration, when the Church remembers, prays for, and offers requiem masses up for the faithful departed in the state of purification. Typically Christians will take this day to offer prayers up on behalf of their departed relatives and friends. Others may remember influential individuals that they never knew personally, such as presidents, musicians, etc. This may be done in the form of the Office of the Dead (Defunctorum officium), i.e. a prayer service offered in memory of departed loved ones. Often this office is prayed on the anniversary (or eve) of the death of a loved one, or on All Souls’ Day.

Today we celebrate All Souls Day. This is the day in which we give thanks to God for those who have passed before us. All too often our reflection on death is one of dread and fear rather than reflecting on death as the beginning of new life.
On reflecting on All Souls Day I remember one time when i was massaging my mother for her to get a nap. During that time my mother was suffering from cancer a “malegnat meloma” cancer of the mole. She had battled with the cancer for at least three years. He had gone through difficult treatment. During our conversation my mother mentioned her fear of death. I remember not knowing what to say. She may have personal reason to fear death because of regret at the life that she was living. I may say that my mother was so strict and sometimes i had wish for her to change her style in diciplining her children. I remember feeling that her comments were very normal for a person who was fighting cancer. At the same time I remember not having words to meet her concern.

Wisdom 3:1‐9

The readings that we have heard proclaimed at Mass today speak to the fear that my mother was feeling and I wish I had been able to use them during our conversation. The author of the Book of Wisdom writes, “But the souls of the righteous are in the hand of God, and no torment will ever touch them. In the eyes of the foolish they seemed to have died, and their departure was thought to be a disaster, and their going forth from us to be their destruction; but they are at peace (Wisdom 3:1‐3).” The author says that the just who have died are protected and loved by God.

One of my favorite songs is entitled “In the Arms of An Angel” by Kelly Clarkson.. The theme of the song is that nothing can happen to us in life which takes out outside of God’s care and protection. In a similar way we never leave God’s protection in life or death. We often fear what will happen between death and judgment. Death is a mystery. We are not called to understand death but merely to trust in God’s love

We go as far as to say that we can pray for the dead and our prayers have value in freeing them for eternal life in heaven. We believe that the dead are with us and can pray for us as well. In this feast we celebrate that those who love God, whether living or dead, are united in a living communion with Christ and one another.

Now on its third year, the event dubbed as “Treasure Quest: The Sun Star-Isuzu Challenge Year 3,” once more brought together motorists, members of the press and self-proclaimed adventurers for a day of tasks that tested their physical, mental, and even vehicle endurance.
The event, which kicked-off at in Panagdait, Mabolo, Cebu City, gathered around 30 groups (with four members each), all vying for the P50,000 top prize, and various consolation prizes. The Treasure Quest first started out as an urban adventure on wheels that aimed to create a unique interaction among Isuzu motorists and Sun Star (Cebu’s premier local newspaper) readers.
This year, the largest reality treasure hunt ever held in Cebu tied up with the Cebu Chamber of Commerce so that Treasure Quest is now an official event during the Cebu Business Month. Part of the objectives of the event is to promote various key spots in Cebu – areas that play a major role in the city’s commercial and tourism industry – by making them venues of the event’s different tasks.
The organizers also tied up with the Energy and Clean Air Project (ECAP) of USAID and Cebu City’s Clean Air Committee as the city is poised to launch the Clean Air Campaign. This is to raise the level of consciousness of the participants and help promote the city’s environmental campaign.
During the race, various teams, drove around major thoroughfares to complete challenges assigned to every team. Some of the event highlights were the beadmaking challenge at the Globe Building, IT Park, the gastronomic challenge (where participants had to consume fares such as okra shake, balot and raw sili) at the Remote Control Race Track, Happy Valley; a messy and muddy scavenger hunt at the JLR Aggregates in Tingub, Mandaue; and a trivia challenge on board one of Cebu’s vital mass transportation, the Trans-Asia 1 vessel, at the Port Area.
By 8 p.m., a victory dinner attended by Isuzu and Sun Star officials concluded the race. Present were: Art Balmadrid, Isuzu VP for Corporate Business Division; Ken Takashima, Isuzu VP Dealer Network Division; Antonio Pineda, Isuzu Cebu Inc. general manager; Lot Neri, Isuzu Mandaue sales manager; Julius Neri, Jr. VP marketing Sun Star Cebu; and Cebu Chamber of Commerce president Francis Monera.

For the special prizes, Team Vudu was the winner for the Globe Fountain of Beads challenge. Team IPI2 on the other hand, which was driving an Isuzu Crosswind, won the Isuzu Fuel Efficiency challenge, and was awarded a cash prize of P25,000. Last year, the team driving an Isuzu Crosswind also won the same category.
“Treasure Quest: The Sun Star-Isuzu Challenge Year 3” was held in cooperation with Globe Telecoms.

So what are you waiting for? You better join Cebu Treasure Quest 2010 now or else my team might get the Prizes!

VFI began as a backyard poultry and piggery set up in Jagobiao, Mandaue City in the 1960’s as a pastime of Doña Virginia Sy Chiongbian.  Hog carcass and dressed chicken and later choice cuts were then rationed to the family’s shipping business as well as its residence in Cebu City.  In 1968 the business was registered with the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) as Virginia Farms, Inc.

As demand for processed products increased, a 2,215 sq. m. processing plant with canning facilities was constructed on a two-hectare property in Tugbongan, Consolacion in 1977.  Virginia Farms Inc., thus operated both poultry and piggery as well as processing of meat products.  In November 1982, production and marketing of processed meats divisions were spun off to form a new corporation, VFI FOOD, INC., later named VIRGINIA FOOD, INC.

VFI is registered with the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), Bureau of Domestic Trade (BOT) and with the Food and Drug Administration (FDA).  The Company is a member of the Philippine Association of Meat Processors, Inc. (PAMPI) and is also recognized as an accredited member-exporter of the Philippine Exporter Confederation, Inc. (Philexport).

To respond to the growing needs of the market, the Company constructed in February 1990 a Processing Plant on a seven-hectare compound in Canamucan-Cogon, Compostela which is about 26 kilometers North of Cebu City.  The new Plant started to operate in April 1992.  It is rated “AA” by the National Meat Inspection Commission (NMIC).

In January 2002, VIRGINIA FOOD, INC. was acquired by the Manila-based AVALON HOLDINGS, INC.

VFI distributes nationwide its frozen processed meat and canned meat products.  It has its Head Office on A.S. Fortuna Street in Mandaue City, Cebu and a branch office in Manila, interlinking its distribution network all over the country.

Kawasan Falls

Kawasan Falls

Kawasan Falls is a popular getaway destination in the southern part of Cebu. When you get to Badian Town, you’ll have to walk 15 to 30 minutes or less along a very rocky and narrow path. But even though you might stumble a bit, just take it easy and enjoy the trek going up. There’s a beautiful river and all different kinds of tropical plants. It’s not everyday you’ll have a beautiful view like this. You’ll have to cross 3 small bridges before reaching the falls. Try to stop at this moment and look upstream.Your camera can’t wait to take some shots of the background and give you a forever lasting picture of what paradise is.
Kawasan has three waterfalls. The first one is the largest and is usually the most crowded. You can bring some food. But If you want to just relax you don’t have to bring in food since it’s available from the resort’s restaurants.Cottage and tables are also available for rent. You should rent a bamboo raft to take you around the lake, or for a refreshing “waterfall massage” under the falling water. You have the opportunity to climb up beside the waterfall and jump into the water, just like Tarzan.

While you and your friends are enjoying the cool and deep freshwater, the surroundings are relaxing and peaceful. Remember that this area is popular with locals as well as visitors!

Your Cebu Tour should include Kawasan Falls in Matutina, Badian, a town in the southern part of the island of Cebu, which is 115 kilometers away or about 3-hour drive from Cebu City. Set in the middle of a rainforest mountain, the ambiance surrounding the area is very exotic and wild, refreshing and serene. Upon arriving at the entrance which is near the Badian Town plaza, visitors need to pay P10 to the community members that man the entrance and from there the ascent to the falls begins where trekkers would traverse the rocky foot path under a thick canopy of leaves for about 30 minutes. The trek going to the falls is already an experience because of the beautiful landscape created by the tropical bounty along the river banks of the Kawasan River. Further attractions along the way would be the souvenir shops that sell novelty items such as beaded necklaces and T-shirts with Kawasan prints that one can keep as keepsakes of their trip.

Kawasan Falls View

Kawasan Falls View

Kawasan Falls is a multi-tiered cascading water that flows out from a 1 sq. m. opening. The first level, which happens to be the largest, is the most crowded. Going uphill to the next level may take fifteen minutes as well as to the third level. If you decide to explore the higher waterfalls, you might need to hire the services of a “carrier-cum-guide” which will be an added cost. So travel light and bring only wash and wear clothing. Guests can bring their own provisions, but if that is cumbersome, they can buy their food from the restaurants at the resort, however, they should be prepared to be shocked of the higher than the usual selling prices which is really normal at establishments of this nature.
If you include this tourist destination in your Cebu Tour, you will experience nature’s beauty in its total grandeur. You can take a dip in the cool refreshing waters that will surely take the tiredness away after the trek and the long bus ride. Here, you can experience “a natural massage” by hiring a raft for about P300 to take you under the falling water. The price is just comparable to the price a professional masseuse would command if you see one in the city. Since Kawasan Falls is 38 ft. deep, you might need to also rent a life vest which costs P30. The additional amount is a small price for your security especially if you are not confident of your swimming skills.
There are many cottages for rent for about P300 around the area, where you can just relax after swimming and just let the serenity of the mountains lull you to slumber. Don’t be annoyed if an occasional shout as well as children’s excited cries wake you up because they are aplenty in popular tourists destinations like this. To avoid them, try to come earlier or better yet, don’t come on the weekend as you might need to compete for space with them, lol. If you want to maximize your Cebu tour, spend an overnight in the falls. Many overnight cottages can be rented for about P800 to P2000 depending on the number of people availing the room.

Orange Brutus

Orange Brutus

A desire to make a statement in the food industry in Cebu, Phillipines prompted two young entrepreneurs to start Orange Brutus at 1980. This entrepreneurs ventured into the first hamburger chain in cebu with the vision to revolutionize the food retail industry in the visayas. This was a very bold step since hamburger was a relatively new food offered to the filipino people at that time.

The first store was opened in Colon, Cebu City and was situated in the newest department store then, Fairmart. It was a simple, bright, attractive and clean store, vending reasonably priced and good food to its costumers. The main sellers were the charbroiled burgers and fresh fruit shakes.

Through the years, more food products were introduced including the best selling sizzling burger steak and chicken brutus that we carry now. Today, Orange Brutus is known for its healthy and nutritious food. The company makes sure to always prepare the freshest ingredients.

The burgers are charbroiled to ensure that the meat products are low in bad cholesterol and are never pre-cooked. Only the freshest fruits go into the thirst-quenching fruit shakes and premium quality vegetables for its entree and garnishing.
